Is there more meaning to life?
10 September 2020
In the hustle and bustle of modern Singapore, we often find ourselves questioning the very essence of our lives. Why are we here? Are our lives merely a sequence of expected milestones, studying, working, marrying, and eventually facing the inevitability of death? In the relentless pursuit of security, luxury, social status, and experience, we chase after these markers of success, hoping to find fulfillment. But what happens when we achieve these goals? Do we simply set new ones, continuing in an endless cycle of desire and attainment?
These questions haunted me for years, echoing in the depths of my soul. On the surface, I was the epitome of success: a flourishing career, my own business, and a life that many would describe as comfortable. Yet, beneath this veneer of accomplishment, I was steeped in an inexplicable depression. A profound void gnawed at my being, a sense of incompleteness that material success couldn’t fill.
This void led me to ponder deeply about the true meaning of life. I realized that the societal benchmarks I had been striving for were transient and ultimately unfulfilling. They were like mirages in a desert, alluring from a distance but offering no real sustenance. The more I achieved, the more I realized that these achievements were not the panacea for the emptiness I felt. There was a hunger in me for something more profound, something that material success couldn’t satiate.
It was in this phase of introspection and existential questioning that I encountered Christ. In the Christian faith, I found a perspective that offered a radically different view of life’s purpose. Christianity posits that life is not just about what we can acquire or achieve but about something more enduring and profound. It teaches that our existence is not a random occurrence but a journey with a divine purpose.
In Jesus Christ, I discovered a love and a peace that I had never known. Christianity introduced me to the concept of a life lived not for oneself but for something greater. The teachings of Jesus emphasized love, service, forgiveness, and humility, principles that give life a richer, more meaningful dimension. In serving others, in loving beyond myself, I found a joy and fulfillment that no amount of personal success had ever brought me.
This isn’t to say that ambitions and achievements are meaningless. Rather, it’s about reorienting these pursuits within a broader, more profound framework of meaning. In Christianity, the mundane aspects of life take on a new significance when aligned with the greater purpose of loving and serving God and His creation.
The realization that we are part of a larger narrative, one that spans beyond our individual lives, brings a sense of peace and purpose. In this narrative, every act of kindness, every gesture of love, every pursuit of justice is significant. We are not just living for the here and now; we are part of an eternal story.
So, is there more meaning to life? My journey led me to affirm that there is. Life’s true essence isn’t found in the endless chase after material success but in discovering our place in the larger tapestry of God’s design. It’s in understanding that we are not just here to study, work, and accumulate wealth but to live lives that reflect the love and grace of our Creator. It is in this realization that we find the answer to the void, the fulfillment of the soul’s deepest yearnings.
