Christian counsellor or therapist: which do I need?

25 September 2026

If you are in danger or thinking of ending your life, call 995 or SOS on 1767 now. You don't need to decide anything else first.

For everything else: it depends on what you're facing and what kind of help you want. Many people find that a Christian counsellor, a therapist, or both together, is right for them at different times. There's no wrong door.

What a Christian counsellor offers

A Christian counsellor brings your faith into the conversation. They may draw on Scripture and prayer, and they'll understand if questions about God are part of what you're carrying.

On Pray.sg you'll find Biblical Counsellors, Faith Mentors and Marriage Counsellors, working in areas such as Youth, Abuse & Trauma, Conflict, Grief & Miscarriage, Marriage, Suicidal, and Same Sex Attraction.

It's worth knowing that everyone listed counsels in their own capacity, under their own training and their own church. Pray.sg isn't the counsellor. Each one is reviewed before they're listed, but training differs from person to person, so it's fair to ask what theirs is. Some profiles also show their church.

What a therapist or psychologist offers

Therapists and psychologists are usually trained in psychological approaches to things like anxiety, depression, trauma and relationships. Many are Christians themselves, and many will respect your faith even if they don't share it.

Seeing a therapist isn't a sign of weak faith. It's one more way God can bring help to you.

What a psychiatrist offers

A psychiatrist is a medical doctor. They can assess conditions such as depression, bipolar disorder or severe anxiety, and they can prescribe medication if it would help. Often your GP is a good first step and can refer you.

Taking medication for your mind is no more a failure of faith than taking it for your heart.

A few questions to help you decide

  • Is faith at the centre of what you want to talk about? A Christian counsellor may be a natural fit.
  • Have things like sleep, eating, work or getting out of bed been hard for weeks? It's worth seeing a doctor as well as talking to someone.
  • Have you been through abuse or trauma? Look for someone with specific experience in that area, whichever kind of help you choose.
  • Not sure at all? Start with the person you feel able to reach out to. A good counsellor or therapist will tell you if someone else could help you better.

Whoever you see, you can ask about their training and any professional body they belong to. A good helper won't mind the question.

You can ask before you decide

On Pray.sg, you can send a counsellor a question without booking, for example, "Have you worked with anxiety before?" You'll need to sign in, and only you and the counsellor see what you write. Replies come in their own time, not straight away.
