What happens in a first counselling session?

25 September 2026

Usually, a first session is a conversation. The counsellor gets to know you, you get a feel for them, and nothing is expected of you except to turn up as you are.

It's normal to feel nervous about it. Here's what the steps often look like, so the unknown feels a little smaller.

Before you go: booking on Pray.sg

On Pray.sg, you choose a counsellor and pick a time from their open slots. Each time shows whether it's online or in person, and if the counsellor offers both, you choose.

You'll be asked, "What would you like to talk about?" Only you and the counsellor see what you write. A few honest lines are enough. You don't need to have the words for everything yet.

Your request then goes to the counsellor, who accepts or declines it. If they accept, you'll get an email. If their calendar isn't open for direct booking yet, you can send a request instead and the Pray.sg team will arrange a time with them. And if plans change, you can cancel from your dashboard.

Not ready to book? You can ask a counsellor a question first, without booking. Replies come in their own time, not straight away, and you'll get an email when they answer.

What usually happens in the room

Every counsellor works differently, but a first session often includes:

  • Introductions. They may tell you a little about how they work and what they can and can't keep private.
  • Your story, at your pace. They'll usually ask what brought you. Share as much as you're ready to, and no more.
  • Faith, if you'd like it. A Christian counsellor may offer to pray with you or open Scripture together. Many will ask first.
  • What you hope for. Towards the end, you might talk about what would help, and whether and how often to meet again.

Counsellors on Pray.sg set their own session lengths, and many sessions run about an hour.

Online or in person

If you're meeting online, find somewhere quiet and private where you won't be overheard, and try your connection beforehand. If you're meeting in person, the place is in your confirmation. For a session with a set fee, where you meet is shown once the counsellor confirms your payment.

It's okay if it feels hard

People often cry, go quiet, or leave not quite sure what they feel. None of that means it went wrong. You don't have to tell everything in one sitting.

If it doesn't feel like a good fit after one or two sessions, it's fine to try someone else. There's no obligation once you've approached anybody.

Counselling isn't an emergency service

If you're in danger or thinking of ending your life, please don't wait for a session. Call 995 for an emergency, call SOS on 1767 any time, or text SOS CareText on 9151 1767.

When you're ready

The hardest part is often the first message. Take your time, read a few profiles, and when one feels right, find a Christian counsellor on Pray.sg and book your first session.
